Spicing up local market

Picnic basket in tow, Evelyn Pihiou paid a lunchtime visit to the Observer-Reporter a few weeks ago.

Tucked inside were goodies from her Canonsburg kitchen - the latest additions to her Evelyn's Elegant Edibles line of seasoning packets and prepackaged foods with a Mediterranean flair.

I met - and wrote about - Evelyn several years ago when she was selling her products primarily online. Since then, she's expanded her offerings and wanted to share still more news: Her seasonings are now being sold at retail locations around the area, among them five Shop 'n Save stores, including Washington and Canonsburg; McGinnis Sisters in Monroeville; and John McGinnis on Route 88 in the South Hills.

I was treated to a tasty lunch of boneless leg of lamb kabobs marinated in her new Cumin Lamb Spice Mix, which has just a hint of lemon. For dessert, Evelyn drizzled Harvest Honey Glaze Mix over grilled peaches and plums. The glaze was developed to pair with carrots, sweet potatoes and ham, but I found that it complements fruit equally well.

Evelyn also has introduced a hot and spicy New Orleans Rice Mix, Burgundy Wine Meatball Mix and Greek "Cincinnati-Style" Chili Mix, which, incidentally, she said received a thumbs-up from a Cincinnati native who sampled it before buying three packages.
